There are many ways to get into this position.
1. Arabesque
2. Georgia Twist
From a climb, split the silks and lock one foot on one of the silks. I'll assume you've locked in the right foot for these directions, but translate as needed.

Standing on that foot, do a thigh side lean towards the right. Grab the free silk with your right hand, and toss it to the left over your free bent leg. This is a fun flourish!

From a climb, separate the silks and hold them about 3 feet apart from one another. It helps to hold them next to your shoulders, with your arms bent.

Take your feet off the silks, and push them around the outside of, through the silks, and back behind you as far as you can.

Circle them around the silks wide and come back through the middle of the silks, then behind you once more.

This can be done with both feet at once, or alternating twists in an "eggbeater": left leg twist one, right leg twist one, left leg twist two, right leg twist two. Try both and see what works for you.

Bring your feet together below you with straight legs. This position will support you. If you forget to bring your feet together, it's much harder to maintain this position.

Pull up a bit and step your feet back into the slack 'stirrups' to create a footlock. You can do this one at a time to get used to it.

You can do this one at a time if you wish, which eliminates the need for using your arms so much in a pullup. However, it's somewhat easier to get even footlocks if you do them both at once, and it just looks showier.

Note that these footlocks wrap opposite of the traditional figure-8 footlocks. The silk poles will end up outside of your feet rather than on the inside.

To get out, just pull yourself up a bit and push the poles off your feet towards the back. This is opposite the direction of a figure-8 lock, in which you exit by pushing the poles off the front.
Flamenco the same hand as the foot that is in front of you (your right hand, if your right foot is in front of you) on the silk behind you.
Put your rear foot forward so that both feet are next to each other, with the pole of the rear foot around your thigh area.
Twist towards your free hand until the silk poles stop your movement. Grab both poles and stretch the legs out in preparation for a crossback straddle.

Aerial Silks
Type of Fabric
Aerial silks are not made of silk, despite the name.

The breaking strength of a single leg of your aerial silk fabric should be at least 2000 pounds, as a standard practice. Many vendors test and list their breaking points for bolts of fabric, sometimes called "tensile strength" of the fabric (this just means fabric's strength when pulled longways). Be wary of buying fabric that has not been tested unless you are sure it will work for your application.

Fabrics used may vary, but the most common materials are:

Nylon or Polyester in
<ul>
<li>40 denier tricot
<li>70 denier interlock tricot
</ul>

Interlock is stretchy, while tricot is much less so. If you are beginning, it is often easier to learn to climb on a non-stretch, tricot fabric. Experienced aerialists who practice drops often prefer interlock fabric because of the way it gives and absorbs the shock of a fall, though it is more difficult to climb.

Fabric Stretchiness
<HTML5video type="youtube" width="640" height="360" autoplay="false">-21U8-orwbM</HTML5video>

This video, by Rebekah Leach of AerialDancing.com, demonstrates three different stretch levels of fabric.

Your results will vary from vendor to vendor, and even within the same fabric type due to manufacturing differences between bolts of cloth. This is to give you a general idea of what the fabrics should look like, and will let you know what you've been practicing on if you aren't sure what to expect.

Non-stretch fabric is typically wide, around 108" wide.

Stretch fabric is typically narrower.

Hardware
<li>Crash pad/mat
</ul>

For a non-swivel setup, you'll need, at minimum:
<ul>
<li>Carbiner x 1
<li>Rescue 8 x 1
<li>Sling(s)/Runner(s) x 1
</ul>

Hardware
- Carbiner(s)
- Rescue 8
- Sling(s)/Runner(s)
- Swivel (optional)
- Crash pad/mat

For a non-swivel setup, you'll need, at minimum:
- Carbiner x 1
- Rescue 8 x 1
- Sling(s)/Runner(s) x 1

For a swiveling setup, you'll need:
- Carbiner x 2
- Rescue 8 x 1
- Sling(s)/Runner(s) x 1
- Swivel x 1

Safe rigging is essential for any aerialist to learn. You cannot be sure you are safe if you leave your safety up to others to check out - it is your life, after all!

I'm working on this page, so bear with me as I add more information.

Make sure that any fabric, slings, carabiners, and other equipment is up to climbing-grade or higher standards for load bearing. In other words, make sure the load ratings, usually marked in kN (kiloNewtons), are sufficient to hold the aerialist(s) when taking a maximum-height freefall from the very top of the apparatus, and add some more load on for safety.

Equipment such as slings and carabiners also have different load ratings depending on which configuration they are used in. Loading from the sides can be different than loading from the top and bottom. Make sure you completely understand this for your equipment before you rig.

If in doubt, talk with qualified individuals - climbing shops are helpful if you can't find any local help from aerialists.

It is UP TO YOU to stay safe. Inspect others' rigging before you use it. No one should ever be insulted by your inspection, or hurry you along into using equipment before you're comfortable. It's just responsible to ask questions and understand what you're getting into before you do anything on equipment.

This is an inverted climb which looks imposing but isn't as terribly difficult as you might expect.

Begin with one arm, let's say the right arm here for example, holds the silk above the other.

Invert and grab the silks between your feet, with bent knees. Put the same foot higher as the upper hand on the silks - here, since the right hand is above the left on the silks, put the right foot above the left also.

Your feet should be one on either side of the silks, above your hands, but not fully extended or wrapped.

Now, pull your lower hand - here, the left hand - off the silks, and place it above the right hand, at the same time moving your lower foot up above the upper foot. You're moving both lower limbs above the upper limbs at once.

Repeat this with the hand and foot which are now the new lower limbs and ascend up the silks upside-down!

The bicycle climb is a dynamic climb in which the feet move in roughly circular motions, resembling riding a bike.

First, stand in a regular climb on both silks.

Wrap the top foot (the foot which usually clamps down on the flexed foot) in front of and around, then behind the pole. Catch the pole on the outer side of the foot, opposite the arch, and push that foot forward, while at the same time bending the bottom foot and bringing it back behind you.

The scorpion is a great way to show off flexibility, since it ends with you in a circle, pulling your feet back to your head.

From a couple of climbs (you'll need space for this one), split the silks and wrap both feet around the silks twice, bringing your feet together. This is the same as the setup for the Aerial Dance Footlock.

From here, get your arms and torso in front of the split silks by reaching through them and forward. This should be a stable position.

Reach down to your feet and grab each of the tails. Wrap each tail under its corresponding foot.

Keeping your legs straight and spread, tip back, catching the poles with your legs on the outside of the poles.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you keep your legs spread wide as you tip back. You want to catch the poles with your legs on their outsides. If your legs go on the inside instead, you will end up in an ankle hang, which can be very uncomfortable and difficult to come out of. This is yet another reason you should have a spotter present at all times.

Bend your knees. You should be able to reach back up to your feet and pull the dangling tails down closer to your head. This will pull your feet closer to your head for a showy stretch.

To get up, you have two options:

1) Beat up and pull yourself up and out of the position, grabbing the poles and reaching high to pull out of the position.

2) Beat up and reach behind your butt, grabbing the poles here. Flip backwards and over. You can get out from here. This tends to look more graceful than option 1, though it may be more difficult to think about.

From a climb, separate the silks and hold them about 3 feet apart from one another.

Take your feet off the silks, and push them around, through, and back as far as you can.

Circle them around wide and come back through the silks to the back once more.

Bring your feet together. This position will support you. If you forget to bring your feet together, it's much harder to maintain this position.

Pull up and step your feet back into the slack 'stirrups' to create a footlock.

You can do this one at a time if you wish, which eliminates the need for using your arms so much in a pullup. However, it's somewhat easier to get even footlocks if you do them both at once, and it just looks showier.

Note that these footlocks are somewhat opposite of the traditional figure-8 footlocks. The silk poles will end up outside of your feet rather than on the inside.

To get out, just pull yourself up a bit and push the poles off your feet.
To get into the cocoon position, from single foot lock, split the silks and stand up.
Turn towards one of the silks. Spread the silk behind you and sit and lean back into it, like a hammock.
Hang out here, or continue and stand up, enclosing yourself in a long cocoon.

Hand locks are used as aids to get into certain positions on the silks which keep your hands in the same position throughout.

Keep in mind that hand locks are not meant to be bear your full weight. Their role is to help you stay up on the silks using your hands, but they will slip down if too much weight is loaded onto them.

Wrap your arm around one of the fabrics, starting with your arm on the outside of the silk. End with your hand open, not grabbing the silk.
